Ivan Koloff defeated Bruno Sammartino for the World Wide Wrestling Federation heavyweight championship 49 years ago today! Koloff toppled Sammartino's eight-year reign as champion and cemented his legendary status, which would carry him through the rest of his career! Nobody even remembers that he lost the title to Pedro Morales less than a month later—it doesn’t matter anyway because Koloff beat Bruno. Very few people accomplished such a feat!
